Neurontin Side Effects Lawsuits: Linked
to Suicide
Neurontin (Gabapentin) is a drug approved
to treat patients with epileptic seizures. However, the drug
was heavily promoted by the drug maker to treat at least 11 other
conditions. In fact, it is estimated that nearly 80 percent of
all Neurontin prescriptions were filled for unapproved medical
conditions, so-called off label uses. According
to reports, Parke-Davis used a systematic strategy to promote
Neurontin for untested uses, such as chronic pain, bipolar disorder,
ADD, anxiety, migraines and other conditions.
In May 2004 the drug makers parent company:
Warner Lambert agreed to pay $430 million to settle civil and
criminal issues related to Parke-Davis's promotion of Neurontin.
Although doctors may legally prescribe drugs for various diseases,
it is illegal for a company to market drugs for which there is
no FDA approved use.
Unfortunately, the use of Neurontin is believed to be linked
to suicidal behavior. Thus the excessive off-label use of Neurontin
has resulted in many people needlessly having adverse side effects
including suicide or attempted suicide.
The motive for this excessive promotion? In 2000-2001, the drug
maker made nearly three billion dollars in sales of Neurontin.
